Exhausted but unable to switch off?

The ‘tired but wired’ paradox is one of the most common things I hear from people with ME/CFS and burnout. Your body is exhausted, but the moment your head hits the pillow your mind starts running. What I’ve come to understand is that this isn’t a sleep problem. It’s a nervous system problem.

Here’s what’s happening: the nervous system’s job at night is still to scan for threat. It doesn’t know you’re trying to sleep. Thought loops are the brain doing its job. Trying to stop them tends to amplify them. The harder you try to switch off, the more alert the system becomes.

What can help is giving the mind somewhere else to go. Something gentle, specific, and absorbing enough that the threat-scanning quietens on its own. This practice was created with Aliya Burch, a remedial therapist with 26 years of experience in restorative movement and nervous system support. Her voice does the work, so you don’t have to.

What people tell us they notice

The thought loops losing their grip

People often describe the racing thoughts not stopping, exactly, but losing their pull. With something else to follow, the mind stops generating its own material quite so insistently.

Drifting off without noticing

A number of people tell us they don’t remember the end of the recording. They weren’t trying to sleep. They were simply following Aliya’s voice, and at some point they weren’t anymore.

Waking up having actually rested

Not a cure for poor sleep, and it won’t work every time. But several people have described mornings where they noticed something different: a sense of having been properly somewhere else during the night.

From people who use it

“I really enjoy Aliya’s relaxing voice… it helps to immediately begin relaxing oneself. Enjoyed also the overall feeling of safety and comfort.”

“Aliya’s voice was very calming and clear… I felt very calm and rested. I would recommend the audio to others, it is very professionally made, very impressive.”
